The case for bankruptcy according to the Bible

The Bible provides a clear moral and theological foundation for the concept of bankruptcy through its concern for justice, mercy, and economic restoration. In Leviticus 25, God establishes the Year of Jubilee, to occur every fiftieth year, during which debts were forgiven, enslaved persons were freed, and ancestral lands were returned to their original families. This system acknowledged that poverty and debt could arise through circumstances beyond a person’s control and prevented financial failure from becoming permanent or dehumanizing. By mandating periodic debt release, the law reinforced the idea that the land and its wealth ultimately belong to God, not to individuals, and that economic systems must serve human dignity rather than trap people in endless obligation.

The Year of Jubilee also reveals a biblical principle underlying modern ideas of bankruptcy: the possibility of a fresh start. Rather than punishing failure indefinitely, Jubilee restored balance within the community and limited the accumulation of wealth and power by a few at the expense of many. This framework reflects God’s character as both just and compassionate, holding people accountable while also providing structured mercy. In this sense, bankruptcy aligns with biblical ethics by recognizing human vulnerability, restraining exploitation, and allowing individuals and families to reenter economic life with hope and responsibility rather than permanent exclusion.
